Sep 23, 2016 (newstodate): Russia has started preparations for design of a new large freighter aircraft to replace the Antonov 124 Ruslan.
Ukraine's Antonov factory has announced that it will withdraw the license for Russia to operate the AN-124 freighter, leaving the market for large freighter aircraft with a problem.
The concept for a Russian successor to the AN-124 will be developed by Russia's Ministry of Defense as it will be the single largest customer for the aircraft.
Plans are to build on the new-generation Russian jet engine PD-14, developed for the MC-21 aircraft, to power the coming new freighter.
