Sep 23, 2016 (newstodate): Finnair is keen to develop its services towards the pharma and perishables exporting industries requiring special handling and terminal infrastructure.
Today, perishables and especially seafood volumes from Europe on Finnair's traffic account for 33 percent of the volumes while pharmaceuticals account for another five percent of the volumes. On the flights from Asia, perishables comprise one percent and pharmaceuticals another one percent of the volumes.
-Measured in tonnages, these are still not the dominating types of airfreight as general cargo remains 58 percent from Europe and 96 percent on flights from Asia. But volumes alone don't make the day: perishables and especially pharmaceutical shipments are premium cargo carried at attractive rates that contribute significantly to revenues. So we are focusing on these segments as the basis for the design of our new cargo terminal at Helsinki Airport, says Janne Tarvainen, Finnair Cargo Managing Director.
Also testifying to the importance Finnair Cargo attaches to the pharma segment, Finnair Cargo was awarded IATA's PHARMA certificate on June 30, 2015, as the first airline in the world.
The new 31,000 sq m terminal will be divided into three zones: 25,000 sq m will be dedicated to general cargo handling, and two areas dedicated to temperature-controlled zones, roughly 3,000 sq m each.
In contrast to the existing cargo terminal at Helsinki Airport, the coming COOL Terminal has own aircraft parking stands and will benefit from short and safe driving distances to passenger aircraft at the terminals
The new facility will be ready by spring 2017 for handling of the carrier's cargo volumes on the coming fleet of new Airbus A350 aircraft that will lift the company's cargo capacity by almost 50 percent in 2020.
