Sep 14, 2016 (newstodate): Lacking an own national carrier, Lithuania has launched a drive to boost the connectivity of its airports through a new incentive scheme.
With a deadline by October 23, 2016, airlines are thus urged to submit their tenders for launch of new routes in demand by the country's economy and air travelers, or increase of frequency of flights on existing routes.
Successful bidders may then benefit from a new support package from the Route Development Fund.
To qualify, airlines must operate new routes at least twice-weekly, ticket sales must open no later than November 6, 2016, flights must start not later than May 31, 2017, and must be operating at least for three months after the start.
New destinations sought from Vilnius include Beijing, Dubai, Munich, Port, Tbilisi and 25 other cities.
21 new destinations from Kaunas Airport include Beijing, Minsk, Moscow, Oslo, and five destinations in demand from Palanga Airport include Billund, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Helsinki and St Petersburg.
Airlines are, however, also free to propose other destinations from the three Lithuanian airports.
Up to 200,000 euro of support for reimbursement of costs may be allocated for one carrier per three years.
The funds may be spent by the airlines for marketing and advertising costs in introduction and advertising of a new route or additional frequency of flights on the existing route; costs of establishment incurred by the airline as a result of launching a new route or increasing the frequency of flights on the existing route and other closely related costs.
