Sep 08, 2016 (newstodate): During the first eight months of 2016, Keflavik Airport has handled a total of 31,050 tonnes of cargo - an increase by 9.9 percent, y-o-y.
In August 2016 alone, volumes were up 17.4 percent, y-o-y, to 3,965 tonnes, confirming the steep growth curve.
According to Icelandair's figures for August 2016, the carrier saw its over-all cargo volumes up by five percent, but several other carriers are boosting cargo volumes through the airport.
SAS Cargo has reportedly increased its cargo as has also Iceland's cargo carrier Bluebird Cargo, contributing to the growth.
The key driver in the airport's cargo growth may, however, be the huge increase in WOW Air's operations.
-Adding Los Angeles and San Francisco to the network has definitely boosted their cargo figures, says one source in the Icelandic aviation industry.
With so far 14 airlines flying to and from 57 destinations in the coming winter schedule, Keflavik Airport is sure to see the positive trend also in air cargo continuing.
