Sep 06, 2016 (newstodate): Isavia is seeing cargo growth at the country's Keflavik Airport.
During the first eight months of 2016, the airport has handled a total of 31,050 tonnes of cargo - an increase by 9.9 percent, y-o-y.
In August 2016 alone, volumes were up 17.4 percent, y-o-y, to 3,965 tonnes.
The increase in the cargo volumes handled reflects the significant growth in number of airlines now serving the country as well as capacity increases due to higher frequencies on existing routes.
And prospects for sustained growth are promising as seen from plans for traffic to Keflavik Airport during the coming winter season 2016/17.
A total of 14 airlines will thus be connecting Keflavik Airport with 57 destinations which will be a new record for Iceland.
The seat capacity on the routes will thus rise by no less than58.3 percent, y-o-y, and while most airlines operate mid-size aircraft on the routes to Iceland, cargo capacity will still be increasing as well.
