Sep 12, 2016 (newstodate): Will, or won't, Aeroflot be an operator of the Boeing 787 aircraft?
Aeroflot placed its order for 22 Boeing 787 in June 2007, with the first deliveries slated for 2014 and later postponed till 2016.
But in June 2015, Aeroflot backed out from the contract citing both the repeated delays to the deliveries which offers the formal opportunity to break the contract, and the softening of the Russian market for air transportation.
Now, a U-turn is in sight on the issue of Boeing 787 aircraft for Aeroflot: at its latest meeting, the Aeroflot Board confirmed that it will not buy the Dreamliner aircraft, but instead referred the case to the leasing company Avia Capital Services, a 100 percent subsidiary of the State Corporation Rostekhnologii.
Under this model, the leasing company will buy the 22 Boeing 787 aircraft and place them on a leasing contract with Aeroflot, easing the financial strains on the airline.
In March 2007, Aeroflot also placed an order for 22 Airbus A350 aircraft, and this is still to be fulfilled while the delivery dates have not been communicated.
Originally, deliveries were scheduled to start from 2015.
