Aug 31, 2016 (newstodate): Azerbaijan's leading cargo carrier Silk Way Airlines has taken delivery of its 4th Boeing 747-8F freighter at its base at Baku.
In the fleet are also four Boeing 747-400F aircraft formerly operated by Cargolux.
Founded in 2001 and starting commercial flights on October 6, 2001, Silk Way Airlines plans to open new flights to Chicago and Dhaka along with the existing direct regular flights from Baku to Milan, Luxembourg, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Dubai, Seoul, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
The plan to launch flights to the USA has been on the desk for a few years but run into delays due to lobbying by US carriers.
Now, Silk Way Airlines has finally been granted its foreign carrier air permit by DOT, allowing Silk Way Airlines to introduce scheduled and chartered cargo flights between Baku and New York JFK Airport.
Silk Way has long been named as a potential partner to Latvia's Riga Airport, where it would reportedly set up a comprehensive logistics center serving the European distribution of Chinese e-trade shipments.
No official confirmation of these speculations has, however, been provided by either the airline, nor the airport.
