Aug 31, 2016 (newstodate): News broke on the Latvian Ports, Transit and Logistics Council meeting on August 24, 2016, that the Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group is interested in shipping its goods to Northern Europe using Latvia Airport as a transit point.
This may, however, not be the full story of Latvia's quest for a stake in the logistics services supporting China's booming e-trade with Europe.
-We are right now in the process of talking to not just one, but several parties in the fast-growing Chinese e-commerce, says Arthurs Kokars, Riga Airport Director of Strategic Development.
-Alibaba is of course one of China's leading e-commerce companies, but there are others, and we are determined to come up with strong proposals focusing on logistics solutions using Riga Airport as an efficient hub.
-There are several players involved, but Latvian Post is definitely a crucial partner in these endeavors. One asset for us is Latvian Post's ideal location right within the Riga Airport environment which grants efficient logistics and distribution solutions for e-commerce companies.
-This is indeed one of our focal issues in talks with international partners, says Mr Kokars.
