Aug 09, 2016 (newstodate): One Lithuanian airport remains outside the company Lithuanian Airports: Siauliai Airport, in the northern part of the country.
In contrast to the country's three commercial international airports at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga now under unified management, Siauliai Airport is 80 percent controlled by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense that owns the infrastructure comprising the runway, taxiways and the ATC tower serving the NATO activities in the Baltic region.
The airport is, however, keen to develop also its commercial air cargo activities and has established the project New Baltic Air Cargo Gate together with the Latvian partner FCG Ltd and the Lithuanian company Rikusta.
Under the common platform, Siauliai Oro Uostas provides aircraft ground handling services and flight operations, FCG Ltd provides agency services to air carriers, while Rikusta performs customs clearance services, freight forwarding, customs warehouses and transshipment facilities operation management.
So far, the project has managed a series of freighter flights to Israel carrying live animals, and has also attracted the US cargo carrier Atlas Air to Siauliai that has been active in providing support to the airport's military users.
With a 3,500 m runway, Siauliai Airport is fully capable of handling any kind of freighter operations without any weight penalty.
Since 2011, Siauliai Airport has handled a total of 18,963 tonnes of cargo.
