Aug 08, 2016 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport may well see less of Uzbekistan Airways from autumn 2016.
Uzbekistan Airways is placing its first of two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft in commercial service from September, and among the routes to be served with the new aircraft is the route between Tashkent and New York.
Since October 31, 2004, Uzbekistan Airways has been using Riga Airport as a transit hub on its flights between Tashkent and New York, operating a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft on two weekly rotations on the route.
It is now unclear if both, or just one of these flights will be served by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, allowing the carrier to fly non-stop between the two destinations and thus eliminating Riga Airport as an en-route stop.
Since October 23, 2004, airBaltic and Uzbekistan Airways have also cooperated under a code-share agreement covering the flights between Tashkent and Riga, and from July 2015, this agreement has been expanded to comprise also the flights by the Uzbek carrier between Riga and New York.
