Aug 25, 2016 (newstodate): In 2010, Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport was acquired by the Danish investment and management company Airport Development A/S. Now, the airport is up for sale again after years with red figures.
The airport, managed by Danish national Peter Soelbeck as CEO, is actually heading towards bankruptcy with proceedings well underway - but efforts are made to find new investors after the Danish company.
Formerly a DDR air force base equipped with a 3,100 m runway, the airport is capable of handling aircraft up to the size of Boeing 747.
Vision by the Danish owner was to develop traffic by low-cost carriers as well as cargo operators including express companies, and hopes were also to place Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport as an alternative airport to the airports at Berlin and Leipzig.
Neither of these visions materialized, however, and the airport has seen only limited ad-hoc cargo operations as well as brief periods with LCC carrier Ryanair in 2013.
