Aug 25, 2016 (newstodate): The vast volume of China's e-trade with the rest of the world calls for tailored and large-scale logistics solutions - and three Baltic contenders are vying for a share in the business.
It has now surfaced in Baltic media that China's Alibaba Group is in talks with Latvia concerning the use of Riga Airport as a transit point for ex-China exports to Northern Europe.
Earlier expected to be aiming at setting up a comprehensive logistics facility at Riga Airport, Alibaba now seems to be looking purely into using the airport as a transit point if attractive handling and other charges can be obtained.
Latvia's Investment and Development Agency is now working with Riga Airport to finalize a special handling charges scheme to meet Alibaba's demands.
In Estonia, the state-owned postal company Omniva has established a joint-venture with one of China's leading express carriers, SF Express to bring Chinese e-commerce goods into Tallinn Airport for onward distribution.
An in Lithuania, plans for the imminent launch of a dedicated freighter service between Tianjin and Kaunas Airport are well advanced, also targeting the Chinese e-trade logistics.
However similar in shape, the Lithuanian bid seems to differ in keeping the chain of logistics in own hands once the freighter carrying Chinese e-commodities has lifted from China.
