Jul 28, 2016 (newstodate): Steps are now taken to take visions for Greenland's airports infrastructure into the world of realities.
In June, the Greenland government financial committee decided on setting up a new company to manage the process for airport upgrading, and a financial solution for the company including the setting up of of Board, a managing director and staff has also been secured.
As a first move, the coming new company named Kalaallit Airport A/S will shoulder responsibility for planning the projects, freezing an investment plan and seek investors for realization of the expensive projects.
To head Kalaallit Airport A/S, the choice has fallen on Jakup Sverri Kass, Vagar Airport CEO who will now lead the process in its initial formative stage together with the Chairman of the Board, Leo Bruno Larsen.
Plans are that Mr Kass and Mr Larsen will find the candidate for the permanent position as Kalaallit Airport A/S after a four-month period after which Mr Kass will remain as member of the Board that also comprises Peter Eduard Christiansen, Anna-Berit Koertzand Aviaja Lyberth Lennert.
Plans now confirmed are that the runway at the capital airport at Nuuk will be extended to 1,800m, from today's 950m, and Ilulissat Airport will also have its runway extended to 1,800m from today's 845m, and a new airport will be constructed at Qaqortoq with a 1,200m runway.
In June 2016, a group of institutional investors headed by Siemens announced the intention of setting up a consortium to support the financing of the proposed runway extensions in Nuuk and Ilulissat.
