Jun 15, 2016 (newstodate): With the strong focus on the current projects for new passenger terminal infrastructure at Sweden's Stockholm Arlanda Airport, the role of air cargo may seem to be downplayed a bit..
-But this is actually not true. We are indeed fighting on this front as well, and results are quite promising, says Karsten Bjarbo, Swedavia Manager Cargo Operations.
-While Sweden's air cargo volumes are not exactly booming these years, Stockholm Arlanda Airport is still seeing volumes up by some five percent in the first half of this year, which is certainly not bad.
-Also while cargo volumes on pure freighters are not booming, our focus is rather on developing cargo in passenger aircraft belly-holds which is certainly gaining in importance.
-Proportionally, we are seeing more and more belly-hold freight, and this process has been boosted not least with Emirates' operations at Stockholm since September 4, 2013, as well as the build-up of new long-haul routes by Norwegian that also has a strong emphasis on cargo.
-I expect this development to gain further momentum when Stockholm Arlanda is finally cleared by the US security agency NSA to establish pre-clearance for passengers bound for destinations in the USA.
-This will attract more carriers into Stockholm Arlanda and further grow the belly-hold cargo capacity, says Mr Bjarbo.
