Jun 08, 2016 (newstodate): Swedavia is eyeing great potentials with transport of live animals from Stockholm to South Korea by Korean Air Cargo.
-So far we have seen three test operations lifting pigs from Danish breeders from Stockholm Arlanda to South Korea on Korean Air Cargo's Boeing 747-400F aircraft, says Karsten Bjarbo, Swedavia General Manager Cargo Operations.
-Intentions by Korean Air Cargo are to expand this business significantly. Till now much effort has been devoted to solving an array of formal issues concerning legal details and veterinary approvals concerning the transportation and export of the pigs, but everything should now be in place.
-Korean Air Cargo operates three weekly freighter flights at Stockholm Arlanda, and during the test period we have seen one pig operation per month. Looking ahead we expect this to rise to a weekly operation, and this would of course contribute positively to securing the profitability of the freighter operation as well as lifting the cargo volumes at the airport, says Mr Bjarbo.
Until Korean Air Cargo closed down its freighter operation at Copenhagen Airport from the start of the 2015 summer schedule, the Danish exporters lifted their pigs directly from Copenhagen.
As an interim solution, the pig export operations were routed into Korean Air Cargo's continental flights, but the long transportation times led to moving the operation into Stockholm Arlanda instead.
