Jun 16, 2016 (newstodate): While still modest in volume and total value compared to the king crabs, Norway's export of live snow crabs to primarily Japan and USA is gaining momentum.
During the first five months of 2015, the export value of snow crabs increased by no less than 200 percent, y-o-y, to 172 mio Norwegian Crowns, according to Seafood Norway.
In May 2016 alone, the export value accrued to 55 mio Norwegian Crowns, up 17 percent, y-o-y.
Measured in volume , Norway exported 2,608 tonnes of snow crabs during January-May 2016, compared to 968 tonnes in the same period in 2015.
Smaller in size compared to the king crab, the snow crab a very sensitive export commodity requiring close attention and special logistics.
