Jun 29, 2016 (newstodate): Air traffic and passenger volumes are rising at Iceland's Keflavik Airport in 2016.
In January-May 2016, the volume of passengers increased by 34.4 percent, y-o-y, and the number of aircraft movements was up by 7.9 percent, thanks to an increase in the number of new airlines operating at the airport, increasing frequencies by existing airlines, and the introduction of larger aircraft on the routes.
At the same time, the situation in ground handling at Keflavik Airport has changed as well.
While IGS, Icelandair Ground Services, held some 80 percent of the ground handling market in 2013, this proportion dropped to 73 percent in 2015 - and this has proved not to be the end of it.
-IGS' share of the ground handling market in 2016 is now down to about 39 percent, meaning that we are by far the largest handling provider, says Sigthor Skulason, Airport Associates managing director.
-The steep increase in our business means that we have grown our staff from 300 in 2015 to some 500 in 2016, added more terminal and office space, and expanded out fleet of GSE service vehicles. We have, however, kept our organization unchanged, only grown it in size to cope with the increase in business.
-Airport Associates is also providing cargo handling services, and we expect to be handling some 30,000 tonnes of cargo this year, maybe even increasing to about 50,000 tonnes depending on the continued growth in traffic, and mainly consisting of export shipments of Icelandic seafood to the global marketplace.
-So Airport Associates is doing well and quite busy with keeping up with the dynamic growth in traffic at Keflavik Airport, says Mr Skulason.
