Jun 23, 2016 (newstodate): Iran is in dire needs for a thorough renewal of its commercial aircraft fleet.
Due to a long period of sanctions and a stand-off with the USA, Iran has been obliged to keep its aging aircraft fleet in the air, but of the country's total of 266 aircraft, 100 are grounded and only 12 are under 16 years of age.
Iran's transport minister has now laid down that all aircraft older than 23 years must be retired from service within one year, exposing the country's desperate needs for import of new aircraft to serve the country's domestic and international services that call for 550 new aircraft over a nine-year period.
So far, Iran has signed agreements with Airbus for 100 new aircraft, and with Boeing for a similar number of aircraft, but finalization of the deals still hinge on solutions to the investment issues.
