Jun 24, 2016 (newstodate): The never-ending political debate in Greenland over whether or not to extend the runways at the airports of Nuuk, Ilulissat and Qaqortoq may, at long last, have come to end anyhow.
The Greenland government financial committee has finally decided on setting up a new company to manage the process for airport upgrading, and a financial solution for the company including the setting up of of Board, a managing director and staff has also been secured.
As a first move, the coming new company will shoulder responsibility for planning the projects, freezing an investment plan and seek investors for realization of the expensive projects.
The runway at the capital airport at Nuuk will be extended to 1,800m, from today's 950m, and Ilulissat Airport will also have its runway extended to 1,800m from today's 845m, and a new airport will be constructed at Qaqortoq with a 1,200m runway.
Earlier this month, a group of institutional investors, headed by Siemens, announced the intention of setting up a consortium to support the financing of the proposed runway extensions in Nuuk and Ilulissat.
