Jun 06, 2016 (newstodate): One more road block has been cleared towards finding a future concessionaire to manage Lithuanian Airports.
Last week, the Lithuanian Parliament approved a draft law entrusting the management of the gateways to an operator after a tender process to be launched soon.
Bidders with substantial international experience will be invited to file their offers for the concession to manage the three airports at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, and the successful concessionaire will take on the responsibility for the commercial development of the airports from January 1, 2017.
-The highest priority is held by the issue of connectivity. Air transportation is crucial to a small country like Lithuania that still remains a fairly isolated "island" in Europe, said Arijandas Sliupas, Vice Minister of Transportation, in his opening remarks at the recent ACI Regional Airports Conference at Vilnius.
-The aim is also to find an alternative to a national carrier serving the country. We did not success well with either flyLAL or Lituanica, so instead we see the airports concession as a means to turning a new page in the efforts to secure the connectivity much needed in support of the sustained development of our country, Mr Sliupas said.
