May 27, 2016 (newstodate): Magadan Sokol Airport, in Russia's northernmost territory, is in dire needs for modernization, and plans are now to restart construction works in 2017.
Actually, the airport with one 3,452 m runway has just gone through a modernization project, but the works comprised by the project and entrusted to the MDN Group are deemed to be in such poor quality that works have to start all over again.
Eliminating the defects from the earlier renovation will require at least 100 mio Rubles, only partly to be covered by the construction group.
Dalaeroprojekt has now been selected to take on the reconstruction, but work will not start earlier than 2017 due to lack of funds.
For long, the ambitions of Magadan Airport has been seeking a role as a transit and re-fuelling stop on routes between Asia and Europe.
