May 12, 2016 (newstodate): The Lithuanian parliament is expected to finally approve the concession documents at its meeting next week.
The documents have been prepared by the consultant, the Dutch InterVISTAS Consulting Group that won the tender for preparation of the documentation serving as the basis of the tender for a long-term management contract to develop the commercial potentials of the three airports now under joint management of the state-owned holding company Lithuanian Airports.
If the parliament agrees on the process, a tender will be opened soon to call bidders to present their offers for the concession to manage the three airports at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga.
After this tender process, the successful concessionaire will take responsibility for the commercial development of the airports from January 1, 2017.
-The highest priority is held by the issue of connectivity. Air transportation is crucial to a small country like Lithuania that still remains a fairly isolated "island" in Europe, said Arijandas Sliupas, Vice Minister of Transportation, in his opening remarks at today's ACI Regional Airports Conference at Vilnius.
-The aim is also to find an alternative to a national carrier serving the country. We did not success well with either flyLAL or Lituanica, so instead we see the airports concession as a means to turning a new page in the efforts to secure the connectivity much needed in support of the sustained development of our country, Mr Sliupas said.
