May 04, 2016 (newstodate): On May 23, 2016, Sweden's Norrkoping Airport will see the landing of its largest aircraft yet - a Boeing 747-400F freighter.
The freighter from the Israeli carrier CAL Cargo Airlines will operate directly from a US airport to Norrkoping carrying a special load of 12 select race horses to take part in the annual horse racing event Elitloppet May 27-29, at Solvalla not far from the airport.
Earlier, the destination was Gothenburg Airport, but eventually Norrkoping was picked for being closer to the racing course.
Another freighter operation, currently being planned, will bring in other race horses from France.
Norrkoping Airport has long been a preferred airport for handling of horses, serving Icelandair Cargo freighter flights carrying loads of Icelandic horses for the European markets benefiting from its BIP status obtained in 2007.
