May 25, 2016 (newstodate): Finland's Lappeenranta Airport, close to the border with Russia, left Finavia's network by the turn of the year, but efforts to set up traffic already by this summer have proved in vain.
The state allocated one mio Euro for subventions to seek an airline operator to set up traffic from the airport now under regional ownership - but time proved to be too limited to succeed in materializing the ambitions.
Plans were that Green Air, a virtual carrier set up Gert Brask, Sky Greenland, and Denim Air's CCO Berry van Eeuwijk, would set up flights on three European routes with a Fokker 100 from Denim Air's fleet - but the preparations on the Finnish side proved insufficient to meet deadlines.
The last flight operations at the airport were provided by Ryanair that, however, laid down the operation from October 2015, leaving the airport in a void.
