May 19, 2016 (newstodate): Finnair's persistent focus on developing its Asian traffic is strongly reflected in Helsinki Airport's passenger statics for 2015.
For the first time, the volume of Chinese passengers overtook the volume of Russian passengers, and the amount of Chinese passengers at Helsinki Airport grew by 50 percent between 2014 and 2015, to about 300,000.
At the same time, the number of Russian passengers dropped by 30 percent in 2015, to 280,000, reflecting the weakening of the Russian economy and the deterioration of global geopolitical situation.
In January 2016, Finavia was the first European airport operator to conclude a MoU on the Establishment of a Sister Airport Relationship with Capital Airports Holding Company.
The MoU establishes extensive collaboration between Finavia and CAH, including the sister airport agreement between Helsinki Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport, the biggest airport in Asia, in January 2016.
Measured by the amount of connections to Asia, Helsinki Airport is the 5th biggest airport in Europe.
In 2016 there are 17 direct destinations to Asia, five of which are in China, operated by Finnair.
Finnair's launched its first direct flight to Beijing June 2, 1988, making Finnair the first Western European airline to have a non-stop route between Europe and China.
In addition to Finnair's direct flights to China, Helsinki will also see the introduction of flights between Beijing and Helsinki by a new Chinese carrier.
On the route will be Beijing Capital Airlines, starting from May 2017 with two weekly rotations using Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
