May 10, 2016 (newstodate): Air cargo through the Faero Islands' Vagar Airport is taking a sharp dip in 2016.
In the first four months of this year, the airport has handled a total of only 133 tonnes of cargo, which is a drop by 35.9 percent, y-o-y.
To this should be added another 74 tonnes of airmail that is growing by 8.7 percent, y-o-y.
Airfreight has actually been declining during all four months in 2016, with the steepest fall in April when volumes were down by 45.7 percent, y-o-y, to 27.8 tonnes.
Air transportation of cargo is feeling strong competition from sea transports due to the country's relative proximity to the UK and Denmark where regular ferry and cargo lines offer fast services at highly competitive rates.
