May 13, 2016 (newstodate): Estonia may have gained an edge over its Baltic competitors in landing an agreement in September 2015 with one of China's leading logistics companies, SF Express.
Under the LoI, the Estonian state-owned postal company Omniva will enter a joint-venture with SF Express to bring Chinese e-commerce goods into Tallinn Airport for onward distribution.
The ambitions are to bring the goods into the Baltic region, but visions comprise also onward logistics to cover other markets including Russia, the Ukraine, North European countries, and as the next step, the entire European market.
With Estonia's Tallinn Airport as its hub in Europe, SF Express' freighter carrier under expansion, SF Airlines will set up a freighter schedule not yet announced.
With the first flight in 2009, SF Airlines is China's largest cargo carrier, operating a fleet of 12 Boeing 737, 15 Boeing 757 and one Boeing 767 cargo aircraft, with orders placed for a further 29 Boeing 767 freighters.
The airline plans to grow its fleet to over 100 aircraft by 2020 and plans also to build China's first cargo-dedicated airport with construction of the new facility to start already before the end of this year at a yet undisclosed locality.
