Apr 01, 2016 (newstodate): Changes in Russian tourism patterns are breathing new life into plans for the long-overdue opening of Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul International Airport.
Issyk-Kul International Airport was last renovated in 2005 and has one 1,800m runway, extended to allow for operations with aircraft up to the size of Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, new airfield and runway lighting systems have also been implemented.
The airport has, however, not seen any traffic till now.
Pans are to open the airport in 2016, aiming at attracting tourists from Russia that would earlier have traveled to Turkey to experience the natural, leisure and sports offerings in the area around Lake Issyk-Kul.
One of the first Russian carriers planning for flights into the airport is UTAir opening flights from June 6, 2016.
