Apr 02, 2016 (newstodate): Will Mahan air actually ever launch services on the planned route between Tehran and Stockholm, originally slated for June 2, 2016?
-Hardly, says a source in the industry who prefers to remain anonymous.
-Sweden is pressing hard to have Stockholm Arlanda Airport certified by the US authorities to implement pre-clearance of passengers flying to US destinations. Given the pressure by the US government on countries to bar Mahan Air from operating flights into their airports, a final permit to allow Mahan Air into Stockholm would not be considered exactly helpful, he says.
Sweden's CAA has completed its technical appraisal of Mahan Air's summer 2016 schedule for Tehran-Stockholm flights by approving the service, but the case has since been referred to the government's final decision, still pending.
In summer 2015, Sweden scored a significant edge by being selected, as one of only 10 airports in the world, by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to introduce US pre-clearance.
Besides Stockholm Arlanda Airport, these 10 airports are Brussels Airport, Belgium, Punta Cana Airport, Dominican Republic, Narita International Airport, Japan, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Netherlands, Oslo Airport, Norway, Madrid-Barajas Airport, Spain, Istanbul Ataturk Airport, Turkey, and London Heathrow Airport and Manchester Airport, United Kingdom.
Conspicuously absent from the list was Denmark's Copenhagen Airport, that now expects to see the first Mahan Air flight on June 9, 2016.
