Apr 12, 2016 (newstodate): Air cargo is not developing too positively at the Faero Islands' Vagar Airport in 2016.
In Q1 2016, the airport has seen total volumes down by 32.7 percent, y-o-y, to 105.4 tonnes, while mail volumes increased by 5.6 percent to 54.5 tonnes.
Dominating the aviation market in the Faero Islands is Atlantic Airways with two to three daily rotations on the route between the islands and Denmark.
-The Faero Islands are rather close to Europe, including the UK, and the difference in time between air and sea transportation is therefore limited. This means that we are constantly competing with sea transports, says Johanna a Bergi, Atlantic Airways CEO.
-We do have a significant export of seafood, notably salmon, to especially US and China, but these shipments are also mainly sailed to the UK for upload on departures from London Heathrow.
-In the end, forwarders and shippers decide on which way to send their cargo. But we are of course constantly talking to the industry to raise their awareness of the benefits from the air transport alternative, says Ms a Bergi.
