MAr 15, 2016 (newstodate): While western tourists are increasingly shifting their holiday preferences away from Turkey due to repeated acts of terrorism, the country may be finding new markets to support its ailing tourism industry.
One such market is Iran after the lifting of western embargoes during the recent months. And after the MoU signed by the Lufthansa Group and Iran to develop flights and commercial aviation, the door is opening even more widely.
Immediately after this MoU, Sunexpress, a JV airline by Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, has announced plans to launch charter flights from Izmir to Tehran, adding flights from Istanbul and Antalya at a later stage.
Such direct leisure flights were banned by Iran's former president but this is now expected to lifted as well, paving the road for new ventures.
Sunexpress even plans to introduce also scheduled flights between Turkey and Iran once the charter operations have been consolidated.
