Mar 11, 2016 (newstodate): Moscow's fourth international airport, Ramenskoye Zhukovsky Airport was slated to be opened for traffic from March 15, 2016.
That is, however, not going to be.
Without giving any public explanation, the opening of the airport for commercial services has been postponed, with no new opening date set.
The need for a fourth airport to relive congestion at airports in the Moscow region was imperative at the time the project was launched, but with the dampening of Russian air traffic since the imposition of sanctions on the country after the Crimean annexation and the participation in the war in Ukraine, the airport may have faced problems in filling its apron with customers.
Among airlines in talks with the airport for start of services were Tajik Air and Belavia that have not, however, signed any firm agreements with the airport.
Ramenskoye Zhukovsky Airport has two runways, one of which is the longest in Europe - 5,400m.
