Mar 04, 2016 (newstodate): With new regional owners since January 1, 2016, Finland's Lappeenranta Airport is now awaiting the decision by Green Air on plans for new flights to be launched.
-Lappeenranta City and Lappeenranta Airport have firmed up a proposal concerning three new subsidized routes to be opened, and the issue is now in Green Air's corner, says Petteri Lehti, Lappeenranta Airport manager.
-Any decision on when, or whether to start flights and to which destinations will be with Green Air, but we certainly hope plans will materialize with launch of services already during the coming summer season.
-The eventual choice of destinations will also be in the hands of the airline. Any flight connection from our airport would be much welcomed, but there is no doubt that we would be especially happy to have a flight to Germany as we already have much German tourism into this region. But as said, any European destination will be on our wishing-list.
-One major asset of ours is the proximity to St Petersburg, in Russia, that brings some eight million potential passengers within our catchment area. Earlier, some 80 percent of our passengers were actually from Russia, and even if the Russian economy is depressed these days the potential remains, says Mr Lehti.
Lappeenranta Airport has one 2,500 m runway and passenger facilities accommodating the handling of up to 500,000 passengers annually.
The new Estonian-Finnish airline, Green Air is under formation, and even before its first flights it has been taken over by the Danish/Greenlandic company Sky Greenland Holding that also bought all shares in the Dutch carrier Denim Air earlier this month.
