Feb 15, 2016 (newstodate): Turkmenistan aims at having Central Asia's largest airport complex ready for operations by 2017 - and work is fast progressing.
The capacity of the coming new Ashgabat International Airport is planned for 1,600 passengers per hour and handling of 200,000 tonnes of cargo per year, and the airport will be accommodating any type of aircraft and capacity.
The project includes the construction of three terminals for passengers, VIP, and cargo, respectively, and the airport will have a new ICAO-certified 3,800m runway as well as a new taxiway system and large apron facilities.
The new airport tentatively named Ashgabat Oguz Khan International Airport was tendered among international bidders, with a consortium comprising the German company Airport Consulting Partners and ILF Consulting Engineers emerging as winners and responsible for management of the construction of the new international airport, as well as for the development of airports of Turkmenabat and Dashuguz.
In 2013, Polimeks Construction, one of Turkeys biggest contractors, won the tender for the construction of the new airport.
