Feb 26, 2016 (newstodate): Long rumored, plans for a new Norwegian carrier are now turning into reality.
FlyViking is preparing to launch domestic services in Norway on a route connecting Trondheim, Bodoe, Tromsoe, Alta, and Kirkenes in Northern Norway, and Murmansk in Russia.
Behind the initiative is former Wideroe pilot Ola Giaver who is leasing a Dash-8 aircraft that will be delivered by May/June 2016.
Last year, FlyViking acquired the Norwegian company Flytaxi Nord to take over this company's concessions for operations on small airports with short landing strips.
FlyViking will operate in close competition to Wideroe that has managed to remain the dominating domestic carrier for decades, effectively barring other carriers, including the Danish carrier DAT, from gaining a firm foothold in the market for state-subvention flights in Norway's outlaying and sparsely populated northern regions.
