Feb 01, 2016 (newstodate): Icelandair is expecting its passenger volumes to grow by 18 percent, y-o-y, during summer 2016 which requires more aircraft capacity.
In summer 2015 the carrier operated a total of 26 aircraft including 25 Boeing 757-200 aircraft with two freighters, and two of the passenger aircraft will be replaced by larger Boeing Boeing 767 aircraft on routes to North America during summer 2016.
This will, however, still not suffice for meeting the increasing demands in the market, so Icelandair has decided to add one more leased Boeing 757-200 aircraft for the summer 2016 schedule.
The Boeing 757-200 aircraft will remain Icelandair's work horse till at least 2018 when the carrier will begin phasing out the type to be gradually replaced with the start of deliveries of 16 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and Boeing 737 MAX 9 ordered in February 2013.
The last Boeing 757-200 will thus leave commercial service with the carrier by 2025.
