Feb 10, 2016 (newstodate): With new regional owners since January 1, 2016, Finland's Lappeenranta Airport may soon see the first results after its independence from Finavia.
A new Estonian-Finnish airline, Green Air is under formation, and even before its first flights it has been taken over by the Danish/Greenlandic company Sky Greenland Holding that also bought all shares in the Dutch carrier Denim Air earlier this month.
In the plans by Green Air is start of flights from Lappeenranta to three yet-undisclosed destinations in Europe, and plans are now to allocate one Fokker 100 from Denim to Green Air's routes that will be subsidized by the region in an effort to enhance the connectivity of the airport that is close to St Petersburg in Russia.
As of now, the airport is only used by charter carriers while it was formerly served by several scheduled airlines as well.
Lappeenranta Airport has one 2,500 m runway and facilities accommodating the handling of up to 500,000 passengers annually.
