Feb 25, 2016 (newstodate): On February 24, Air Iceland took delivery of its first Bombardier Q400 aircraft.
The delivery marks the start of fleet renewal as a total of three Q400 aircraft will replace the existing fleet of five Fokker 50 aircraft due for retirement after serving as the carrier's backbone since May 1965.
The carrier expects all three new Q400 aircraft to be in service before the end of this spring.
With its higher sped and longer range, compared to the aging F50, the Bombardier Q400 will allow Air Iceland to add flights to Aberdeen in Scotland in co-operation with Icelandair as well as adding a new destination in Greenland from June 2016, Kangerlussuaq, which will be the company's fifth in addition to Kulusuk, Nuuk, Narsarsuaq and Ilulissat.
The deliveries of the three QA40 aircraft have, however, been running behind schedule.
Originally, deliveries were slated to be completed in July and August 2015.
