Feb 17, 2016 (newstodate): ACTS, Aviation Cargo Transit Services, at Riga Airport is readying for launch of its perishable aviation project by H2, 2016.
With strong lobbying by Riga Airport and in coordination with stakeholders including handling companies, airBaltic, Latvian Customs and the country's State Food and Veterinary Service, Riga Airport was opened as of December 8, 2015, for import and transfer of food and non-food animal products between EU and non-EU countries.
One of the stake-holders in this process is ACTS, since 2012 participating in the NATO Afghanistan withdrawal program and handling more than 940 Boeing 747-400F and Boeing 747-8F freighters, or some 90,000 tonnes of cargo at Riga Airport.
-For ACTS, 2016 marks a starting point for exploiting our perishable air logistics potential. So far, we have only handled perishables coming by land, but the potentials for perishables coming by air now constitute an important part of our expansion plan, says Michael Shatsky, ACTS Import/Export Manager.
-Our main client would be the Russian flower market, but potentially it could be also Belarus, Ukraine, and other Baltic States. Riga is only some 900 km away from Moscow and only 500 km from St Petersburg, and with rich experience in logistics due to the huge transit traffic through Latvia to Russia we can deliver the shipments to the end customer much faster, compared to other European logistic venues.
-This translates into additional shelf time in the market, which is crucial for perishables.
-In 2013, we finished constructing additional space adjacent to our current terminal to position our vacuum cooler, one of the biggest in Europe with capacity for storing two air pallets. Moreover, we modernized our current terminal with temperature-controlled equipment and cool storage rooms for up to 100 tonnes of perishable cargo, with a separate sorting area for perishables. This also gave us the possibility to sort and handle general and perishable cargo simultaneously.
-Our terminal provides in-house offices for the state Customs, Phytosanitary inspection and Food and Veterinary service, which also makes the processing of cargo much faster and hassle-free. Now we are in the process of making all the necessary arrangements to launch the perishable aviation project through our terminal in Riga in the second half of 2016,. says Mr Shatsky.
The NATO Afghanistan withdrawal program will be terminated by the end of 2017, having built a reputation for ACTS and Riga Airport among operators like Atlas Air, National Air, Chapman-Freeborn and others.
