Dec 06, 2016 (newstodate): Estonia's Tallinn Airport was still down in cargo volumes in November 2016 - but the trend may be turning.
A total of 1,621 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport in November, down 6.3 percent, y-o-y - but considerably less than in the preceding three months that have been showing double-digit decreases up to minus 50.3 percent in October.
In November, airfreight export from Tallinn Export was up 167 percent to 621 tonnes while airfreight imports were down 41.7 percent to 786 tonnes.
In the first 11 months of this year, the airport has handled a total of 12,238 tonnes of cargo, still down 19.2 percent, y-o-y.
Boding well for the airport's cargo volumes is the start of services on November 22, 2016, by the Russian carrier Aviastar-TU that performed its first flight from Changchun, in Manchuria, to Tallinn with an en-route stop at Kemerovo International Airport.
In the short term, plans are to perform a series of twice-weekly rotations on the route so far till December 29, 2016.
The freighter traffic is driven by imports of Chinese e-commodities for onward distribution via Tallinn Airport to markets in the Baltic, Russian and other European markets.
In September 2015, the Estonian state-owned postal company Omniva's subsidiary Post11 signed an agreement with S.F. Express to bring Chinese e-commerce goods into Tallinn Airport for onward distribution.
