Dec 05, 2016 (newstodate): At very long last, the US Department of Transportation has approved Norwegians application for a foreign carrier permit.
Norwegian's Irish subsidiary already operates flights to the USA under its Norwegian air operator certificate, and applied for rights to fly to the States in December 2013.
Heavy lobbying by US airlines and legislators to turn down the application long held the process in a limbo, but after the EU Commission filed for arbitration over the three-year-old dispute and formally charged the U.S. with breaching the US/EU Open Skies agreement, DOT finally gave in.
With the new permit, Norwegian will plan expansion of its routes from Cork to the USA, and the carrier is now looking forward to have its foreign carrier permit for Norwegian Air UK approved next.
