Dec 12, 2016 (newstodate): Lithuania's fourth international airport, Siauliai Airport is determined to grow its share of the country's airfreight market.
One of the companies at the airport is Rava Cargo, set up in 2014, that operates in handling of both import and export cargo.
-We are happy to cooperate with this company, says Arturas Jurkevicius, Head of Siauliai Airport's Ground Handling and Cargo Division.
-Rava Cargo is handling the commercial airfreight at Siauliai Airport that is also serving as a military air force base with extensive NATO operations, says Mr Jurkevicius
-Commercial airfreight has long been a low-keyed business at the airport, but now thing are moving fast and the situation concerning commercial airfreight is really good, with volumes around 4,000 tonnes annually and with a positive trend.
-Right now we are seeing the construction of a new 3,000 sq m air cargo terminal with a capacity of handling up to 10,000 tonnes of cargo annually, and this project will be completed in 2017. Also a new cargo apron area has been will be constructed, requiring significant investments from Siauliai Municipality that owns the commercial part of the airport.
-We are seeing the volume of freighter operations growing, primarily comprising flights from Turkey by MNG into Siauliai, but we are in close talks with more airlines that have shown interest in opening traffic here. So far, the traffic is on ad-hoc charter basis but we do expect to see the launch of scheduled cargo operations as well, says Mr Jurkevicius.
Siauliai Airport has announced its aim to form a long-term cargo service platform in cooperation with the partners of a project named New Baltic Air Cargo Gate, and RAVA Cargo is participating in these efforts.
Owned partly by Lithuania's Ministry of Defense and partly by Siauliai Municipality, Siauliai Airport does not belong to the State Enterprise Lithuanian Airports comprising the airports at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga.
