Nov 15, 2016 (newstodate): The new Northern Pier at Latvia's Riga Airport was officially opened at a ceremony on November 15.
The expansion of the airport's infrastructure is needed to cope with the sustained increase in annual passenger volumes generated by the growing number of airlines operating at the airport and not least the strong growth planned by airBaltic that is building its fleet with delivery of a total of 20 CS300 aircraft over the coming few years.
The current capacity of the Riga airport terminal allows for processing of 3.5 million direct passengers per year, but already now, the total number of the airport's direct and transit passengers exceeds five million per year.
After the opening of the new Northern Pier, the transit passenger zone will be capable of handling 710 million passengers a year.
The two floors of the new Pier will offer the passengers 19 new boarding sectors, three aircraft bridges, two new shops and five cafes, playgrounds for children, as well as spacious and comfortable waiting rooms.
The next step for the Riga airport infrastructure development will be further development of the terminal, expansion of the passenger registration room, the luggage pick-up and sorting zones, and the security control zone, construction of a multi-storey car park and a junction with the Riga airport station of the new European gauge Rail Baltica project.
