Nov 01, 2016 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic has announced the opening of a new summer route in 2017, to Odessa on Ukraine's Black Sea coast.
With the first first flight on March 26, 2016, the carrier will be offering up to four weekly rotations between Riga and Odessa with a mix of Bombardier Q400 and Boeing 737 aircraft.
The new route marks a return to Odessa by airBaltic that first launched flights from Riga on August 2, 2005, as part of a major drive for flights to Ukraine including the launch of flights to Dnepropetrovsk from October 31, 2005, and to Simferopol from April 11, 2006.
During its earlier "Sturm-und-Drang" period, airBaltic also had plans for flights to Kharkiv as well as Lviv.
Due to declining demand in times of global crisis, airBaltic reduced capacity and then discontinued flights to Odessa and Simferopol in H1, 2014, while keeping only flights to Kiev on the schedule.
