Nov 15, 2016 (newstodate): Macedonia now seems to have abandoned its plans for setting up a new national carrier.
In 2015, Macedonia contracted the Dutch-based InterVistas Consulting Group to work out a comprehensive report on the expected traffic flow in and out of Macedonia as well as working out a financial viability study to asses whether or not it would be feasible to establish a new carrier to serve the country's needs.
The final conclusion has been that this would not be feasible given the large initial costs, and Macedonia is also not open to allowing foreign investments into the project from the start.
Reopening the issue would in the future depend on significant increases in the country's air traffic volumes.
The country's former national carrier MAT Macedonian Airlines went bust folded its wings in 2009, and several later attempts including La Luna Airlines, a JV between Croatia's Dubrovnik Airline and Macedonian investors, and Airlift Service all failed.
