Nov 24, 2016 (newstodate): Cargo volumes through Lithuania's smallest international airport at the Baltic coast, Palanga Airport are modest - but growing in 2016.
During the first 10 months of this year, the airport has handled a total of 140 tonnes of cargo which is 24 percent up, y-o-y.
The rise in volumes reflects the general increase in traffic at the airport in 2016 that has proved an exceptionally fine year for Palanga airport, with new airline customers and higher frequencies on some routes.
The C European LCC Wizz Air launched flights to Palanga from London Luton Airport, starting from March 23, 2016, offering three weekly rotations using Airbus A320 aircraft.
Starting from March 28, 2016, the Polish carrier LOT has introduced flights to Palanga from Warsaw, with six weekly rotations on the route.
The Irish LCC Ryanair, already operating at the country's other airports at Kaunas and Vilnius, has also started operations on a new route between London Stansted and Palanga from March 2016, offering two weekly rotations on the route.
The Belarus carrier Belavia has been offering flights between Minsk and Palanga from June 19 until September 4, 2016, with one weekly rotation on the route, and the Russian carrier Rusline has also operated flights between Moscow and Palanga during the summer period in 2016.
Also on June 19, 2016, Ukraine International Airlines performed its first flight to Palanga from Kiev, offering two weekly rotations until September 21, 2016.
Since July 1, 2014, all three international airports of Lithuania have been consolidated within one single juridical entity, State Enterprise Lithuanian Airports under the joint management of Gediminas Almantas as CEO, while Marius Gelzinis is Director of Palanga Airport.
