Nov 11, 2016 (newstodate): Scandinavia is increasingly attracting visitors from India, both leisure and business travelers, although there is still no direct non-stop service between India and Scandinavia.
According to figures reported by Travel Biz India, overnight stays by visitors from India to Sweden increased by 15 percent, y-o-y, in 2015, to 158,000, overnight stays by visitors from India to Denmark increased by 30 percent, y-o-y, to 72,000, and overnight stays by visitors from India to Norway were up by 20 percent, y-o-y, to 20,000.
Over the last five years, the overall growth has been consistent of about 15-30 percent from India to the Scandinavia countries, and in 2016 the Scandinavian Tourist Board expects 10 percent average growth from the Indian market.
While no figures on the air cargo side are available, pharmaceutical products weigh heavily in India's air cargo industry, both on the importing and exporting side, and major airfreight commodities from India include also garments, fabric, leather goods, machinery parts, tools, books and printed matter.
As reported by newstodate earlier this month, Air India is considering plans for opening flights between India and Denmark from Spring 2017.
The information was provided by India's ambassador to Denmark, speaking to Danish tour operators and travel press on the occasion of a workshop in Copenhagen on October 23, 2016, with 12 Indian exhibitors.
-We are informed that Air India is indeed working on plans for flights between Delhi and Copenhagen, but no further details are available at this moment as the issue is still under consideration, says Ahok Kumar Polur, Commercial and Marketing Officer at India's Embassy in Denmark.
According to other media, Air India also has flights to Stockholm as an option at a later stage.
Today, no carrier offers direct flights between India and Denmark since SAS closed down its short-lived route from Copenhagen, Denmark, from March, 2009.
In a Nordic context, Finnair is alone in providing flights to India since November 2006, currently offering up to three weekly rotations between Helsinki and Delhi while going up to daily rotations during certain periods.
