Nov 25, 2016 (newstodate): For a long period, the Faroe Islands saw only one carrier operating at its Vagar Airport. These times are now changing.
Ruling the seas is currently the country's Atlantic Airways with daily flights on the route, using Airbus A319 aircraft and soon to introduce also the larger Airbus A320 aircraft to be delivered before end of December 2016.
Introducing competition on the trunk route between the Faroe Islands and Denmark, SAS is to launch services from Copenhagen Airport starting from April 27, 2017, offering 12 weekly services with Airbus A320 Family aircraft.
Flights on the route were started in 1988 by Atlantic Airways, and until October 2004 Maersk Air also operated flights between Vagar and Copenhagen.
A significant break-through for Vagar Airport is yesterday's announcement that the Scottish carrier Loganair will launch seasonal scheduled services to Vagar Airport from Aberdeen Airport offering twice-weekly services with a SAAB2000 aircraft during the period May 26 till the end of September 2017.
Launching the seasonal service, Loganair has indicated also its intentions to monitor the market for serving the route on an all-year basis.
While entering the market cautiously, Loganair is nonetheless the first international carrier to set its eyes on the Faroe Islands.
The new service has been timed to meet connecting Flybe flights at Aberdeen, opening connections to more UK destinations including Birmingham, Manchester Kirkwall and Sumburgh.
Earlier operational restrictions were lifted as Vagar Airport's extended runway was opened for traffic from December 3, 2011.
The original 1,250m runway was extended eastwards by 350m and by another 200m westwards, allowing for operations without weight penalty by larger aircraft including the Airbus A320 Family/Boeing 737.
Also contributing to the airport's operational capability is the implementation of the airnav system RNP-AR, developed by the Airbus subsidiary Quovadis.
