Oct 12, 2016 (newstodate): Sweden's Swedavia, managing most of the country's airports including Stockholm Airport is keen to grow its cargo volumes - but odds are not overly positive in today's environment.
-We are actively pursuing this issue at trade fairs, conferences and other marketing events. But the bottom line is that the days of all-cargo operations have peaked, and cargo is today mostly carried in the belly compartments on passenger aircraft, says Karsten Bjarbo, Swedavia Manager Cargo Operations.
-Still, we are seeing a significant growth in long-haul traffic at Stockholm Airport and we managed a six percent over-all growth in volumes in the first half of 2016 which is a rather satisfying trend. But new freighter operators are not visible in the short term, at least.
-Now we are watching how Sweden's manufacturing industries will develop, but we are of course anxiously following Ericsson's decision to move its production increasingly outside the country which will mean a decline in export volumes.
-On the other hand we are convinced that these negative trends have been balanced, or even out-balanced by a corresponding growth in volumes of e-commerce. It is safe to assume that had we not seen the volumes of e-commerce shipments growing this steeply, our cargo statistics would not have been as positive as they actually are.
-And the bulk of the e-commerce shipments are today carried as belly cargo on the passenger aircraft, notably on the long-haul flights, says Mr Bjarbo.
