Oct 06, 2016 (newstodate): The first airport in Russia built after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Gelendzhik Airport, in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, is preparing for commissioning a new passenger terminal in 2018.
The new 5,200 sq m terminal will raise the airport's passenger handling capacity from currently 140 to 230 passengers per hour.
Behind the terminal project is the Russian airport management company Basel Aero that is shouldering the planning and construction works under an agreement with the regional authorities.
Officially opened for traffic on June 5, 2010, Gelendzhik Airport has one 3,100 m runway allowing for aircraft up to the size of Boeing 757 and Boeing 737 and Airbus A320-family aircraft.
The airport has replaced the existing WW II military airfield, Krasnodar Airport that today accepts only small aircraft, but Krasnodar Airport will still have a role as an alternative for regional traffic.
